2017 is the 60th year of San Francisco Giants baseball and my 40th year as a Giants fan (I'm actually 46 and have some memories of the prior year, but the 1978 season is the first one in my memory I recall following the Giants actively as a fan from first pitch to last out).
To that end, each day during this season I'll present the top five San Francisco Giant moments from that date in history. Here's the thing - you're not going to see milestones; you can get the date Mays hit 660 from the Giants game notes. I went through each win in San Francisco history (seriously? yes) to search for the top moments in Win Probability Added and Win Expectancy to find the most crucial moments that impacted the winning of baseball games.
Absent something unforeseen, we'll do this all year.
I'm not going to rank the five - each of the five moments per day will be presented in chronological order, rank them any way you like.
We start with March 31. Here are the top 5 moments on March 31 in San Francisco Giants history.
1998 at Houston, 3rd inning, down 1-0, 2 outs and a 1-2 count, Jeff Kent hits a 3 run homer off Shane Reynolds. It was his 30th homer as a Giant.
1998 at Houston, 13th inning, tied 4-4, same game as the previous moment, 10 innings later, one out, men on first and third, Alex Diaz (who you do not remember) singles into the hole at short off CJ Nitkowski, scoring Rey Sanchez to give us the 5-4 lead, we'd go on to win 9-4. Diaz had only 7 more hits as a Giant.
2003 at San Diego, 9th inning tied 2-2, Benito Santiago leads off with a homer off Clay Condrey. 16 years prior Santiago won the NL Rookie of the Year as a Padre.
2003 at San Diego, next pitch, 9th inning up 3-2, JT Snow homers off Condrey, we go on to win 5-2. Snow only hit another 7 homers the rest of the season.
2014 at Arizona, 9th inning,7-7, one on, two outs, Buster Posey hit a 2 run homer off Addison Reed; the Giants hold on to get the 9-8 Opening Day win. It was Posey's 62nd career homer.
Tune back in tomorrow. Go Giants.

Wrestlemania 33 Preview (Plus, Every Mania Match Ever Ranked)
Wednesday, March 29, 2017
The best part of the build for Wrestlemania 33 has been the constant repetition of the phrase "ultimate thrill ride" - commercials, announcers, the figurehead authority figures, even wrestlers within the context of their promos. If Trump starts telling his surrogates to similarly brand the upcoming attempt to cut taxes for millionaires (Spicer: Tax reform, as we know, is the Ultimate Thrill Ride. Stop shaking your head) that shouldn't surprise.
Here's the card:
Universal Title: Goldberg v. Brock Lesnar (w/Heyman)
WWE Title: Bray Wyatt v. Randy Orton
Unsanctioned: Seth Rollins v. HHH
AJ Styles v. Shane McMahon
Undertaker v. Roman Reigns
John Cena/Nikki Bella v. Miz/Maryse
US Title: Chris Jericho v. Kevin Owens
IC Title: Dean Ambrose v. Baron Corbin
RAW Tags: Ladder Match: Anderson/Gallows v. Cesaro/Sheamus v. Cass/Enzo
RAW Women's Title: Bayley v. Sasha Banks v. Charlotte Flair v. Nia Jax
Currently, the two matches in which I have the most interest, the cruiser title match (Neville v. Aries, which is the best workrate match on paper) and the Battle Royal (in which I'm largely interested just to see who enters, given the ramifications to my wrestling Counterfactual are both scheduled for the pre-show. Looks like the Smackdown women's match is headed there too.
(Aries/Neville was good, deliberate because they won't let the juniors work fast paced matches but good, I went 3 3/4, Neville went over. Mojo Rawley won the Battle Royal with aid from Rob Gronkowski, they swapped in the Smackdown women's match to the main show and the IC match wound up here. I'll get to it later, that women's match short and pointless)
The moment in which I have the most interest is Kurt Angle's induction into the HOF and then his coming out with the rest of the inductees at Mania, Angle's going to get a bigger reaction than the promotion anticipates.
So, this card...well, look, considering the ability WWE has to essentially create any professional wrestling card it likes, there are better ways to utilize assets than this.
Universal Title: Goldberg v. Brock Lesnar (w/Heyman)
The Universal Title is the RAW belt, they created it after they split the company in half again. Goldberg took it from Owens in a squash a month ago.
Your appreciation for this Goldberg run probably relies on a combination of your sensitivity to bad matches (check that, Goldberg's matches haven't risen to the level of bad) and your interest in considering other ways in which WWE could leverage their resources.
Coming into this program, Brock Lesnar was an impenetrable monster, his appearance on any show the highlight of that show. He was positioned as a cut above the rest of the promotion.
They spent all that equity on Goldberg, who has dominated Lesnar for months.
That's going to end here, Brock's going to kick out of Goldberg's stuff, he's going to take that belt, he's going to keep it all year and he's going to lose it to Reigns at WM34 (spoiler).
And maybe that will have been worth it, they got this "run" out of Goldberg, they got this Mania main event, and if Brock feels like an unstoppable beast a year from now you still feed him to Reigns and keep the train moving.
For me, this feud has severely compromised Brock, has really taken the heart out of his act with Heyman (they've chosen to have Brock largely no sell that Goldberg keeps kicking his ass, the result isn't that Brock still feels like a monster it's that the act feels past its sell by date) and I don't think it likely they're going to be able to return Lesnar to the space he occupied before this program.
If you're going to take that Lesnar heat and give it to someone else, fundamentally, I don't think that person should be Goldberg, who might have zero future with the promotion after Sunday and who hasn't had a good match since 9-11 (if that's hyperbole it's minor). If Samoa Joe, instead if being a guy in a dress shirt, kills Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series last year, that becomes a line he goes to the rest of his career, like Jericho saying he beat Austin and Rock the same night or Lesnar ending the Undertaker's streak.
So - opposed, I guess is what I'm saying. As a use of your resources, this would not have been my first choice.
(Edit - Brock went over in 5 minutes, it was exactly as expected. 3 stars)
WWE Title: Bray Wyatt v. Randy Orton
-This is the lineal WWF title, the last time I did a preview it was for the Rumble, at which Cena took this belt from AJ, and then lost it to Bray at the subsequent PPV in a multi-man cage match.
Orton won the Rumble to get this title shot - except that's now how they did it of course, Orton had been aligned with Wyatt for months, so turned down the title shot - except his being a member of the Wyatt Family was a ruse all along (so, er, why turn down the title shot?) and he burned down the Wyatt compound and then worked his way back into getting the shot that he gave up for no reason in the first place.
This could go either way, Orton isn't headed for a long babyface title run (Orton doesn't really seem to have a place in this promotion, he''s not good enough to be one of the workrate guys, he's not old enough to be one of the barely there veterans, he's not over enough to have a permanent top of the card slot, I'm unsure what they do with this guy) but he could win Sunday and then give it back to Bray next month or next week. I'll say Bray goes over, they're maybe pressing the "this guy has magical powers" button again and that means he's getting fed.
(Edit - They went conceptual here, taking us away from the action with images of maggots and similar disgusting objects that apparently were being controlled by Bray. An all time bad Mania match. 10:30 min 1 star)
Unsanctioned: Seth Rollins v. HHH
-If it's WWE, there must be McMahons. Last year, Stephanie got to play dress up for the elaborate HHH introduction at Mania (Stephanie's the McMahon for which I have the least use, including the grandkids and Linda, who now works in an aspirationally totalitarian administration) and let's assume we get the pleasure of that Sunday as well.
The match is unsanctioned because Rollins legit re-injured his surgically repaired knee a couple months ago and almost certainly isn't ready for this; and in storyline waived his rights to sue if he suffers more damage in this match (the fun part is there's never, I don't believe, been a successful suit from a wrestler against WWE based on injury and I don't think any have ever reached a trial on the merits; WWE has unlimited coffers and a willingness to starve you out, the hold harmless agreement is less a work than you think).
Given what I assume are Rollins' limitations and what I know are Hunter's, probably this is a garbage match that is good enough, I guess. Samoa Joe has been working as Hunter's muscle, and presumably gets involved here to start a program with Rollins. I'd guess, given the length of this storyline (really spanning the last few years, from Rollins' heel turn all the way until Sunday) it's gotta be Seth's going over for the full redemption, perhaps with aid of a returning Finn Balor.
(Edit - Overly long, deliberately paced match, Rollins with the pedigree. No Joe, No Devitt 25:30, 3 stars)
AJ Styles v. Shane McMahon
-AJ Styles has the best case for who is consistently putting up the best matches in WWE over the past year, and they're booking him against the promoter's middle aged non wrestler son in as much of a vanity match as we've ever seen at Wrestlemania, at least since last year when they booked Shane/Undertaker.
The thing I said about using your resources well? Shinsuke Nakamura's still in NXT and Shane McMahon's wrestling AJ Styles at Wrestlemania. Vince should have to send the equivalent of Sean Spicer out in front of the wrestling press every day to try to sell this trash fire of a decision.
It'll be good - AJ Styles can't have a bad Wrestlemania match this year, and they'll give it all the time it needs. But Jesus Christ will it not be the match they could have. They could do AJ/Nakamura and have it be one of the ten best Mania matches of all time without much of a stretch. This match will not be one of the ten best Mania matches of all time.
Goldberg was a major wrestling star, sure that was almost twenty years ago and he was only a star for a minute and a half - but I get the view that his "starpower" somehow justifies the decision to put him on top; this Shane McMahon thing is just a vanity exercise. It's like Ivanka getting a security clearance.
(Edit - sort of a combination of spectacular spots and cringy work by Shane, in the end it was the top of what you could have expected, 3 3/4 stars, 20 min, AJ went over)
Undertaker v. Roman Reigns
-A booking decision I liked at the time and think that subsequent events have born out its value was having Brock end the Undertaker's streak. The Dead Man sure looks finished, he hasn't had a good Mania match since being carried by Punk in 2014 and cosmetically he looks less like an undead monster than a broken down old wrestler. WWE has lost the thing it had, Undertaker being unbeaten was an automatic storyline every year and they spent that equity - but they spent it on Lesnar and he and Heyman turned that into a brand. There wasn't much juice left in the 'Taker, they squeezed at the right time.
-Roman Reigns is pretty good. I'm on an extreme negative end in viewing the role John Cena's had in the promotion, for most of his WWE tenure, booing him wasn't "fans just wanting to boo the babyface" it was a genuine expression of dislike of his position in the promotion.
-That dislike also exists for Reigns; it's for good reason, he's not one of the dozen guys I'd pick to be the face of the promotion post-Cena, but he's also pretty good. Both things are true.
-Heel Reigns is pretty easily the only way he can go right now; he works heel here in a probably not that good match and he probably wins. He almost certainly wins. This is maybe not the Undertaker's last ever match but you can see it from here.
(Edit - might have been the Undertaker's last match, he doesn't have anything left, match just didn't have any juice, 23 min 2 1/2 stars)
John Cena/Nikki Bella v. Miz/Maryse
-Speaking of Cena.
This match is designed for me to hate, and I hate it. Late period Cena has done his best in ring work, put him in a match with an elite worker and he can and usually does hold his own enough for that match to be great. That doesn't make Cena an elite worker, he clearly is not and never has been nor is particularly close - but he can hold up his end that's good enough, given how much space his matches take up in the build and on the card.
Miz has improved, he's also not an elite worker, but he's good enough to have a good match against wrestlers who are better than he is.
Put these two together and add their wives? Hard pass. There is no combination of these four that I'd have any interest in watching. Given the program, Cena has to go over and maybe he proposes in the ring post-match and the wedding winds up on E!
(Edit - Bad, but short at 9:45, Cena won and proposed. 1 1/2 stars)
US Title: Chris Jericho v. Kevin Owens
-Maybe the best program, maybe the best match on the card. Owens and Jericho had been aligned for months, doing a comedy act that, while often was entertaining, really dragged down the Owens title reign. They teased breaking up for weeks, with it being unclear which man would turn on the other - in the end, Owens turned on Jericho, making Jericho the de facto babyface and here we are.
Owens goes over, it will be a good match; Jericho maybe doesn't have another great match in him, but if he does, this would be a good spot for it. The show needs it.
(Edit - Good match, not special, Owens took the belt, 16:30, 3 1/2 stars)
IC Title: Dean Ambrose v. Baron Corbin
-Baron Corbin is a tall guy. He's better than Big Cass. I'd guess he takes the belt here. Ambrose should probably be back in a tag act; I don't know if there's a way to freshen him up from where we currently stand.
(Edit - Didn't make the main show, 11 min 2 1/2 stars, Ambrose kept)
RAW Tags: Ladder Match: Anderson/Gallows v. Cesaro/Sheamus v. Cass/Enzo
-The problem with Ambrose in a tag act is his ceiling is probably Cesaro/Sheamus, and that's the bottom of the card (maybe that changes for a short time after the Hardys debut, that probably brings some attention to the tag ranks). The ladder stip helps this match, I'd expect Cass and Enzo to get the Zach Ryder title win this year.
(Edit - Hardys, who rehabbed their careers over the past year, returned to promotion and went over in the best match of the night, 11 min, 4 stars)
RAW Women's Title: Bayley v. Sasha Banks v. Charlotte Flair v. Nia Jax
Hard to see a women's four way give us much in terms of match quality. Let's say Charlotte gets the belt back.
(Edit - and it didn't have much in terms of match quality, 12 min, 2 1/4 stars, Bayley kept)
So, that's the show. It does not look great and the possibility of having top end matches is really limited. Wrestlemania is always a show you want to watch; it's the ultimate thrill ride after all, but there's not a ton of juice to this show.
Here are my rankings of every WM match ever. 1-310. Match times are rounded.
