Wrestlemania 32 is Sunday.
I'm a Wrestlemania lifer; old enough to have processed them all in real time, and never lapsed away such that I was unaware of any particular build. I'm 32-32.
This might be the one I've least looked forward to.
In order, here's my level of anticipation heading into each of the 32 Manias.
The Top Third
20 - I was a Benoit guy; from say, '97 forward he was my favorite wrestler. I anticipated both that he'd win the title and in a pretty good match, this is the Mania that I most wanted to see.
30 - Early in the 21st century I became a heavy watcher of US indie wrestling; it was probably years before I missed a Ring of Honor show, largely on the secondary market. Danielson's being recognized by the general public (including by my World Champion San Francisco Giants) was a delighful turn of events and I was super hot on his winning the title (don't let them tell you wins and losses don't matter).
1 - I was 14 for the first Wrestlemania; I saw Snuka come off the cage, I saw Rocky III, I watched MTV and SNL - the "hey, people know who these wrestlers are now" leap into pop culture hit my early teenage sweet spot.
3 - Really my last year as a Hulkamaniac; cause why didn't he just give Andre a shot, you know? This show also had a babyface Roddy Piper and the beginning of my preferfence for match quality over spectacle in the Savage/Steamboat build.
12 - I was in college/law school from WM5-11 and while I remained as connected as possible with the product, it wasn't at the forefront of my brain. WM12 was my first year out of school; it was centered around a workrate match with a pure sports build in Shawn v. Bret, and with the advent of the internet I had the ability to drown myself with information/speculation. A symphony of circumstance all leading to heavy show interest.
4 - Tournament. Are you kidding me? A tournament for the vacant title at Wrestlemania? Stoked.
8 - I was into Bret/Piper, I was into Flair/Savage, I didn't hate Hogan/Sid - and I WAS GOING TO GO; I HAD TICKETS TO WRESTLEMANIA 8. I didn't go, as it turns out, leading to a ranking in the bottom half of the top 10.
13 - I saw a lot of live wrestling in '96, including being at Survivor Series to watch Bret/Austin, so that match was a huge draw for me.
26 - Bret was back; add Rey v. Punk and what looked to be Shawn's retirement match and I was really intrigued for this one. How will they put together Bret/Vince, what can Bret still do?
14 - Deep into Japanese tape trading by '98, I had seen Cactus Jack/Terry Funk in Japan, I had seen Taka Michinoku - having all three on this show, plus what was thought to be Shawn Michaels's last match, this was one to watch.
The Middle Third
16 - A promise of real work here, Benoit/Jericho/Angle and a spotfest tag team ladder match; my WWF consumption really high in this stage of the Attitude Era.
19- I was into Shawn/Jericho, but really this was all about Brock/Angle, I had enormously high expectations for Brock/Angle.
6 - I never liked Warrior and my Hogan fandom was over, but they sold the hell out of that match, enough that I was really intrigued in how it was they were going to book it.
5 - I assumed a Hogan win over Savage and didn't really want it to happen, but that's the only shine taken off what was a tremendous, slow build to the main event.
18 - I mean, the Hogan return. The NWO at Wrestlemania? Hulk Hogan returning to Wrestlemania 9 years later? In.
17 - Same idea as the year before, there was a Benoit/Angle match and the sequel to the ladder collision tag match to drive up my interest.
2 - Solely attributed to my investment in the product as a 15 year old; it might have been the NFL players in the battle royal and Mr. T boxing Roddy Piper that primarily drove my interest.
28 - I was amped about Danielson/Sheamus, which turned out to be a bait and switch, and Punk/Jericho.
21- Rey v. Eddy. Angle v. Shawn. Come on!
10 - In the bottom half of expectations, largely due to my being as disconnected from the product as any time before or since headed in; I was interested primarily in Bret/Owen and who might wind up as WWF Champion; the greatness of that match plus the greatness of the ladder match later in the card surprised.
The Bottom Third
25 - Steamboat wrestling was enough for me to be interested, add the ladder match, Hardy v. Hardy and Undertaker/Michaels and I had relatively high expectations.
22 - I was into Rey winning the title, Foley in a garbage match, and the ladder match
11 - I was stoked by the year before, that gave most of the excitement for this card; I thought Bret/Backlund might be really good and looked forward to Shawn/Diesel.
9 - Hogan had just returned, I was fairly certain Bret would walk out with the title, and Mr. Perfect was returning to the Mania ring.
23 - Benoit/MVP wasn't a great program and I thought Benoit was going under, but I still wanted to see it, and Punk's mania debut in the ladder match. Oh, and Sabu. Sabu at Wrestlemania.
32 - So, it isn't the Mania I've least looked forward to, in fact, I'm more bullish than was I a year ago - I'm into AJ/Jericho, any Zayn/Owens interaction, and Brock/Ambrose.
31. I wanted to see the ladder match - other than that, not a lot grabbed me; Lesnar is always good, literally in each match, so I was confident that would be good as well.
29 - I'm not particularly invested in the Undertaker, but was glad to see Punk in such a high profile spot; I assumed Lesnar/HHH would be good.
24 - Flair's last match was not much of a draw for me, but still probably the thing I most looked forward to other than Punk in the ladder match.
27 - I was excited for Danielson's debut, I thought Punk/Orton wouldn't be bad. I really don't much like late period Mania, clearly.
And then The Floor - The 2 Manias I Least Looked Forward to.
7- I was interested in Savage possibly retiring, but didn't assume the match against the Warrior would be very good and there wasn't much else on the card for me.
15 - Foley was working, other than that, just not a ton to get fired up for.
So, there you go - my apologies to 32. There were 6 Manias I wanted to see less than this one.
Hell in a Cell: Undertaker vs. Shane McMahon
-A lot of WWE is for people who aren't me, this is an excellent example. Shane returned from years in exile and worked his way into a match for control of RAW (I think that's right, that's it's just for RAW and not the entire promotion).
McMahon family in-fighting is at the very bottom of storytelling for me and has been for 15 years. There's nothing they could do to make that interesting.
Undertaker is just Vince's muscle, which works from a "who can I use to beat Shane" perspective, I guess, given the Taker's Mania record, but terrible from a "why does the Undertaker care who runs RAW" perspective.
They've thrown it in the Cell to tease that the middle aged promoter's son is going to take a giant bump. Which he might.
They'll throw a lot into this; the two big matches will be really heavily booked and maybe part of the same booking. So, maybe Shane/Reigns and HHH/Steph/ turn, Vince/Shane, with Reigns as the heel champ now run RAW and HHH/Steph run Smackdown. It would get Reigns where he probably needs to be and more closely align HHH with his NXT persona. They've booked Hunter as a babyface in the title program and maybe he'd like a face run. Are you ready for a brand split?
Edit: 3 stars, super long, they went a half hour, most of it really slow. Shane took the bump from the top of the cage and that's main reason match reaches this level. Taker wins.
WWE Title: HHH v. Roman Reigns
-Hunter won the vacant title in the Rumble; theoretically this is when Reigns, screwed by the authority, gets Daniel Bryan like vindication. But Reigns hasn't really been screwed, hasn't shown any vulnerability, and doesn't have the working ability to compensate for storyline deficiency.
Reigns isn't bad and within the construction of The Shield he was perfectly fine, but he's not the best guy in the promotion by a million miles and fans who have spent a decade watching a guy who was not the best guy in the promotion by a million miles (Cena) be on top are just unwilling to have this tone deaf promotion do what it does anymore.
(there's developed a cottage industry of online writers who, either to be contrary or to curry favor with the promotion or, I'd suggest, to separate themselves from the fans "hey, we're not the commoners like those people chanting, we write online", spend more time criticizing fans for booing than the promotion for creating the boos; a lot of wrestling online writers lack any class consciousness. They're people who would rat out a union organizer to the boss.)
The only way fans will cheer Reigns is if he's part of the reunited Shield; so were they wanting to keep him as a babyface they'd need Ambrose and a returning Black to aid him. There's a high probability of run ins at WM 32. Foley, maybe Austin and Rock, Michaels in this match. If a babyface Shield aided Reigns that gets him a face reaction; I think his turning heel in the way described earlier makes sense.
Reigns and Shane win these matches, they'll both be overly booked, I don't want to watch either. There's zero future value in 3 of these 4 wrestlers.
Edit: 2 3/4 stars, another really long match, 27 minutes, I was wrong about the bundling of the booking, they didn't overbook these matches, they just sort of let them die out there with not particularly good wrestling. Reigns clean.
Street Fight: Brock Lesnar v. Dean Ambrose
-Brock's always good, in every scenario, never not good. Brock Lesnar having a good match on a big show is the biggest guarantee in WWE right now other than the promotion selling itself as a good corporate citizen in ways that don't involve labor relations. The sell here has been that Ambrose is going to use weapons in a way that equalizes the playing field. That works for me; Lesnar will beat the hell out of Ambrose, Ambrose will use weapons hopefully in an interesting way, and one of them wins - I'd guess it's Dean, that elevates him into whatever top program they want to run involving Reigns and a returning Rollins and the weapon involvement helps protect Lesnar.
Edit: 3 1/4 stars, largely, Brock just killed him for 13 minutes.
AJ Styles v. Chris Jericho
-Styles has been one of the best workers in the world his entire career; his top end TNA work stands with anything he did in Japan. He's not treated that way in WWE, mired in this 50/50 program with the veteran Jericho. But there are worse fates; Jericho can still work well enough to have good matches, and depending upon how much time this match is given, it could be the best match of the night. Styles goes over, no question.
Edit: 3 1/4 stars, wrong again, Jericho went over, good, but no better than that.
IC Ladder Match: Kevin Owens v. Sami Zayn v. Dolph Ziggler v. Stardust v. Miz v. Zach Ryder v. Sin Cara
-They do a ladder match every year at Mania, it's always good, but the safety considerations take precedent and limit its value.
Note - that doesn't mean they shouldn't take those safety considerations, but it might mean that matches which rely on big bumps shouldn't be done by WWE anymore. They're in between, wanting to sell the possibility of real bumps without doing any. A singles match with just Owens and Zayn would be leagues better.
That said - this will be good, even in its watered down form, the collisions provided by the ladder stip allow for a good match, Ziggler is always up to steal a show, and everything Zayn/Owens do will be good.
Edit: 3 3/4 stars, at the higher end of late period WWE multi man singles ladder matches, Ryder won the belt in a surprise.
New Day v. League of Nations
-I am not in the demographic of those entertained by the New Day's shtick, a comedy act has a high bar for me to find a lot of interest and even then I just want it in small doses at the bottom of the card. League of Nations is just a thrown together group of foreign heels; there's not much here.
There are a couple of postmatch possibilities - one would be Langston, who the promotion apparently sees as a singles wrestler (match quality aside) turning on his group; and the other would be a Bullet Club debut (which makes a lot of sense to me) with Balor/Anderson/Gallows attacking New Day to start that program.
Edit: 2 stars, just a set up for Austin/Michaels/Foley at match's end.
Women's Title: Charlotte Flair v. Sasha Banks v. Becky Lynch
-Sasha and Becky are the best women's workers on the main roster; Charlotte's fine and her presence allows for Ric's presence. The "diva's revolution" has, to this date, meant only a couple of good women's matches on the main roster and mostly a lot of filler. I'd assume this will be the former and also be massively overrated by the portion of wrestling analysts desperate for gender equity in the promotion.
Edit: 3 3/4 stars, best women's match in Mania history.
Andre the Giant Battle Royal
-If there's any value here it's that maybe there is a surprise, "hey, there's Greg Valentine" type of entrant.
There are 3 pre-show matches. It's a long goddamn show.
Edit: 1 star. Just there.
Usos v. Dudleys
US Title: Kalisto v. Ryback
Women's 10 Man Tag
-The Usos are the best tag team in the promotion; the Dudleys don't have much work left in them, but make for a good presence. Kalisto's a good young flyer and hopefully keeps his belt in this big man/little man match against your stock musclehead Ryback, and then the rest of the women on the main roster are thrown together in a giant tag.
Is it worth watching - yes, it's Wrestlemania. Watch them all. The Lesnar match can't miss, a couple others should also be good, and there's intrigue in the booking of the main events.
